An oil filter is a part that strains harmful particles out of engine oil. It’s made of paper or woven fibers that capture the particles so they can be disposed of during the next oil change.
If you don’t change the oil filter often enough, it can become restricted and ineffective at removing contaminants. It can also get plugged and cause a restriction that starves the engine of lubrication.
It's possible to change the oil filter on its own, but it's best to change the oil at the same time.
