Car grease is a lubricant that’s applied to different moving parts of a vehicle that come into regular contact with other parts. Its purpose is to reduce friction between these parts, which helps prevent excessive wear and tear as well as rust and corrosion, expanding their lifespan. Valvoline™ greases are engineered to stay put under heat, load, and exposure, safeguarding parts and keeping them going for longer.
Lithium grease, like Valvoline™ General Purpose Amber Grease, is versatile and suitable for many general automotive uses, offering durability against heat and water. It’s also well-suited for revolving and high-speed applications. Moly grease, such as Valvoline™ Moly-Fortified Full Synthetic Grease, includes molybdenum disulfide for added protection under extreme load or sliding contacts. It’s best suited for parts that are slow moving or operate in high-temperature and high-pressure environments. The best choice depends on the specific application. Just be sure not to mix the greases, as the mixture can break down quickly and lead to inconsistent performance.
Moly grease contains molybdenum disulfide, a solid additive that reduces wear and under high pressure, shock loading, and sliding conditions. It’s commonly used in constant-velocity and universal joints, and other heavy-duty components. It’s most common with heavy machinery and off-road vehicles, though it can also be used with regular automobiles. Valvoline™ Moly-Fortified Full Synthetic Grease provides the added protection needed where standard grease may fall short.
Ball joints with grease fittings can be serviced using a grease gun at each fitting until fresh grease appears at the seal. Pump slowly, and use care not to overfill, as the grease is wasted and can damage the protective boot. Moly greases work best on wheel bearings, though lithium greases can work as well. Valvoline™ Multi-Vehicle Moly-Fortified Grease both provide the extreme pressure protection needed for ball joints as well as universal joints.
Wheel bearings need grease that can withstand high temperatures and heavy loads. So in most cases, what you’ll want to look for is NLGI #2 GC-LB grease, which is graded to suggest the best level of protection. Valvoline™ Multi-Vehicle High Temperature Red Grease is formulated with a lithium complex thickener to deliver excellent protection against heat, water, and wear, making it ideal for wheel bearings of all types.
