Find Out If Your Car Has a Dipstick or a Sealed Transmission

If you are wondering if you have a dipstick to check transmission or the alternative, take a look under the hood. If you see a second dipstick (typically red or yellow, often labeled "ATF" or "Transmission"), you have a checkable transmission.

If you don’t, your transmission is sealed and is checked from underneath at a specific operating temperature.

How to Check Transmission Fluid with a Dipstick

You lifted the hood and found a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid. Here’s what you do next:

  1. Park on flat ground with the engine running and the transmission warmed up (most OEMs specify checking with the transmission at operating temperature).
  2. Set the parking brake with the engine still running, shift through every gear, and pause briefly in each.
  3. Pull the transmission dipstick, wipe it clean, re-insert fully, then pull again.
  4. Read the level against the HOT marks (not the COLD marks, unless the engine is genuinely cold).
  5. Check the color and consistency on the dipstick or rag. It should be clear with a pink or cherry-red tint. If it’s burnt-smelling, it could be an indicator of overheating or degradation. Transmission fluid color can be a useful clue, but not a definitive diagnosis of when to change the fluid.

How to Check Transmission Fluid on a Sealed Transmission

Refer to your owner’s manual. Sealed transmissions don’t have a dipstick. The check is performed beneath the vehicle, via a fill plug on the side of the case (depending on the vehicle). A DIY transmission fluid check is not recommended for a sealed transmission.

Drain and fill is the most accessible DIY procedure. Remove the drain plug (or, on transmissions without a drain plug, the lowest pan bolt), drain the accessible fluid, and refill to spec.

A drain-and-fill typically replaces only 30–60% of the total fluid (varies by transmission) because the torque converter retains the rest. Repeat at the next interval to refresh a larger portion of the total volume.

Full Fluid Exchange

If your driving is considered severe services, due to stop-and-go traffic, towing or hauling heavy loads, a full fluid exchange may be the right method for a transmission fluid change (refer to your owner’s manual). Usually performed at a shop, the mechanic pumps the new fluid in while displacing the old, replacing nearly 100% of the volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fluid change cause transmission problems?

On a properly functioning transmission, no, a fluid change cannot cause transmission trouble. The myth comes from cases where a transmission was failing, and a fluid change happened to coincide. Fresh fluid can briefly clean the varnish that was holding worn clutches together. The transmission was failing either way.

Is a flush better than a drain-and-fill?

Check your owner’s manual for recommendations. A fluid flush might not always necessary. It may be better to replace the total fluid volume, but there is no reason to do that in many cases. For routine maintenance on a healthy transmission, a drain-and-fill may be sufficient. A flush makes sense after extended neglect or when switching fluid types.

What happens if I never change my transmission fluid?
